The editing process
Editing this film was an odyssey: we worked on it for nine days straight, experiencing all the highs and lows that are part and parcel of the creative process. Soaring high in creativity, plunging deep into despair: does this actually make sense? We—Tatjana Berlakovic, the film's brilliant director, and I—strolled along the tightrope between aesthetics and precision as we formed a new whole from many snippets in the editing room.
The story
With the documentary Valentin Oman – Eine Spurensuche (Valentin Oman – A Search for Traces) ORF is dedicating a detailed portrait to the painter and artist on his 90th birthday: Valentin Oman tells his own story – beginning with his childhood as a Carinthian Slovenian, marked by exclusion, shame, and collective silence after the Second World War. These formative experiences are the foundation of his artistic work, which for decades has revolved around a profound exploration of humanity, human dignity, and transience. Between canvases, light and shadow, water and stone, a cinematic journey through Valentin Oman's life and work unfolds. Valentin Oman – Eine Spurensuche (Valentin Oman – A Search for Traces) testifies to the power of art and is a film about painting as memory, about identity and overcoming boundaries.
