Rainhard Fendrich – I never wanted to be one of them

To mark the 70th birthday of the exceptional Viennese artist, ORF is presenting a comprehensive documentary with and about Rainhard Fendrich. It was directed by Peter Koköfer, who took the musician on a journey through his entire career. The result is two films: a 52-minute version for broadcast in early 2025 and a 70-minute version for broadcast in fall 2025.

The editing process

Editing the rollercoaster ride through Rainhard Fendrich's life was a nerve-wracking process. The director, Peter Koköfer, and I dug through concert recordings, television interviews, films and moderation appearances - with the mass of material it was always challenging not to lose the thread - with a lot of fun and also a bit of sweat we have now managed to finalize this portrait. Thank you, Peter Koköfer, for the amusing collaboration.

The story

With “I Am From Austria”, Fendrich created the unofficial anthem of the nation in 1989. What was intended as a critical reflection became the emotional confession of an entire generation. As presenter of the “Millionenshow”, “Herzblatt” and “Nix is Fix”, he also proved his talent as an entertainer on television. Fendrich provides personal insights during a walk through Vienna's Ahrenbergpark, where he talks about his childhood, which was not always easy. These early experiences shaped his artistic work, which began in 1980 with the rebellious album “Ich wollte nie einer von denen sein”. This was followed by hits such as “Strada del Sole”, “Macho Macho”, “Es lebe der Sport” and “Weusd a herz hast wia a Bergwerk”, which made him a celebrated singer-songwriter.

Using exclusive studio recordings and a concert recording from the RKH, the documentary shows how Fendrich continues to delight his audience today with a sharp tongue and a keen sense for the absurdities of everyday life. Previously unpublished archive material documents the various facets of his artistic work: the biting satirist, the gifted entertainer, the thoughtful singer-songwriter. The portrait of a man who began as a rebellious artist and became a national institution - without ever being unfaithful to himself. (Text: ORF)
